When must you get new OCI Card
While OCI provides a visa for a lifetime; to keep records in order, the OCI registration certificate and visa have to be re-issued in some cases.
Renewal of OCI is required:
1. Each time a new passport is issued up to the completion of 20 years of age. OCI documents have to be re-issued and payment of appropriate fee is required.
2. Once an OCI holder reaches age 50, they must get their OCI registration certificate and visa re-issued.
Explanation: Between the ages of 21 and 50, there is no mandatory requirement to get documents re-issued, when you get a new passport. In such cases, if you travel to India, you would have to carry your previous passport that has the OCI 'U' visa stamped on it, along with your new passport. In case someone wishes to get fresh documents issued to them as a matter of convenience, they can do so on payment of the appropriate fee. Once you get new documents, then the requirement to carry your previous passport is not required as the OCI 'U' visa will be stamped on your new passport.
Not compulsory for everyone to renew OCI after age 50
While OCI documents must be renewed by those who got OCI visa prior to reaching age 50, there is no such requirement for those who got their first OCI visa when they were already 50 years or above.
Hence if you got your OCI visa and you were over 50 years of age at that time. You need not apply for new OCI visa. There is no compulsory requirement to do so. If your passport that has the original OCI stamp expires, then you can travel to India if you take:
1. Your expired passport that has the OCI original visa stamped on it.
2. Your OCI booklet. (Rules that the OCI booklet must be carried came into effect from April 2013)
